Are you ready for a natural first aid kit that doesn’t expire and doesn’t make you feel drugged when you use it? If you’re thinking that seems too good to be true, read on…
As we’re starting to gear up for fall season, I’m thinking about the germs and bugs about to hit full force everywhere we go. Not that I’m scared of these germs. I am very seldom sick.
If you’ve been experimenting with therapeutic grade essential oils lately, you’re probably increasingly aware of their benefits. Everything from scrapes and bug bites to indigestion, occasional aches and discomfort and puffiness, essential oils have you covered.
If you’re new to essential oils, don’t worry! There’s no time like the present to learn more.
Assembling your own natural first aid kit with essential oils won’t take much effort at all, but it will help prepare you for almost anything life unexpectedly sends your way. And an added bonus: these oils have a shelf life of pretty much forever. (They’ve found viable essential oils in Egyptian tombs that still have their therapeutic properties!) This means you don’t have to replace them after they’ve expired, which will save you lots of extra cash in the long run. Ahhh, that sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
And if that isn’t cool enough, essential oils also won’t make you feel like you’re walking through a fog or in a coma because you’re drugged up. You’ll just feel better. Naturally.
Here are some of the best oils to put in your natural First Aid kit:
Respiratory Blend: This oil aids the body in all things respiratory related and helps to ease breathing. *
Soothing Blend: This blend is my go-to when I need to ease the tension building up in my shoulders and head, but it’s also good for all sorts of aches and discomfort related to overworked muscles and joint problems. *
Digestive Blend: Another blend of oils specifically formulated to deal with anything digestive tract related. I’ve seen many people receive near instant relief from digestive issues.*
Frankincense: The wise men got something right when they showed up with this oil as a baby gift! Frankincense is the granddaddy oil that’s known as the ‘go-to’. When it doubt, use Frankincense. And truly, it’s good for just about anything from nervousness, to skin rejuvenation, to inducing feelings of peace and wellness. *
Ginger: Known widely for help in stomach upset and motion sickness, this oil also aids in most other digestive issues.*
Lavender: This powerhouse oil is one that I greatly underestimated when I first learned about the health and healing benefits of essential oils. This common soothing oil is also a ‘go-to’ up there with frankincense and has a wide variety of uses ranging from stings and bites to calming and sleeping to minor burns, cuts and scrapes. *
Lemon: A great disinfectant and detox oil. Good to use in cleaning products but gentle enough to drink. *
Melaleuca: This oil is so versatile and important; the Australian army carries it in their first aid kits. This oil is wonderful as a purifying agent for the home, skin and air. It also promotes a healthy immune function *
Protective Blend: I love this oil. LOVE LOVE it. It smells like Christmas, tastes cinnamon-y, and aids your body in staying healthy by helping to strengthen your immune system and promotes respiratory health. It is also a great addition to cleaning, as it inhibits growth of some of the strongest super buggy kinds of germs out there. *
Oregano: This is one of the most potent and powerful essential oils that has been used for centuries in traditional health practices for it’s cleansing and immune-boosting properties.* The primary chemical components of Oregano are carvacol and thymol, both in the phenols group, which possess cleansing and antioxidant properties.* Due to its high phenol content, caution should be taken when inhaling or diffusing Oregano; only one to two drops is needed. Additionally, Oregano should be diluted when applied to the skin. One drop taken daily can help maintain healthy immune function; Oregano can be taken more frequently when seasonal threats are high or as needed to further support the immune system.* In addition to being a popular cooking spice, Oregano also supports healthy digestion.* Oregano acts as an enhancer and equalizer in essential oil blends and can help support healthy respiratory function when taken internally.*
Tension Blend: This is a distinctive blend of essential oils known to help provide grounding and balanced emotions. Known for their soothing effects on both the mind and body, the essential oils in the tension blend quickly, promote feelings of relaxation and calm emotions. Simply apply to the neck, shoulders, or behind the ears to help calm emotions while breathing in the cooling, distinctive aroma to soothe head and neck tension.
Peppermint: I love to just open this oil and sniff it from time to time because it smells so good. Peppermint covers a lot of ground, too. Good for tension and digestive issues, symptoms related to winter seasonal bugs, and minor aches and pains to name a few. *
Cleansing Blend: This blend is good to get rid of smelly scents, and to clean the air and surfaces, but it’s also good for cuts, bites, scrapes and similar issues. *
Repellent Blend: This is your answer to Deet related sprays. Deet-free, TerraShield helps repel those pesky little biters that plague anyone stepping outdoors. And it works better than Deet, complete without toxins. *
In addition to the above oils (and any other you’d like to add), here are other things to add to your natural first aid kit:
Fractionated coconut oil (or other carrier oil such as almond oil or oil you like): Use this to dilute the essential oils, as well as for chapped lips and dry skin.
Bandages in all shapes and sizes
Safety pins, tweezers and scissors
Latex gloves
Water
A flashlight (and fresh batteries)
Glass spray bottles (add water and essential oils for disinfectants, air sprays, sunburn sprays, bug sprays, etc.)
Stick all these wonderful things in a plastic bag or bin and there you have it: A natural first aid kit (that really doesn’t expire or make you feel worse for having used it).
(PS: We have a kit where you can get most of the above oils listed at a special price. Hit the “Contact Us” button below and we can tell you about it.)
*If it seems like I’m being annoyingly vague about essential oils, this is because the FDA doesn’t endorse essential oils for anything, and me saying something like, “This oil will help when you get the …. ,” will technically get me in trouble with them. So, instead, I have to say that it might help support the body in a certain way or help with seasonal difficult times or whatever. I apologize for how flakey this sounds, but I’m a bit too much of a lightweight to do jail time (if it would ever come to that…I don’t know…but I don’t want to find out either!)
