You’ve heard about doTERRA and maybe you’ve been approached by someone wanting you to give essential oils a try….but you have questions and doubts….here are some reasons why you avoid joining doTERRA and some facts that might surprise you.
You’re Not a Hippy
You don’t know exactly what essential oils are, but you DO know you don’t need any of that hippy dippy stuff in your life, thank you very much. How is a flowery unicorn and butterflies kind of magic potion going to help you?
Essential oils are actually mainstream. While hippies might have brought them back in the 1960s and 1970s, they’re certainly not the only ones using them these days. Their popularity has grown and spread to every cross section of people simply because they’re powerful and they work. They’re also affordable, natural and easy to use.
You Think They Cost WAY Too Much
That tiny little bottle of oil costs THAT much? You could get the same thing at, well, anywhere! Even the Dollar Store sells essential oils now. For just a BUCK! Why would you want to buy them from doTERRA?
I know you’ve probably heard the saying, ‘You get what you pay for’. Now, before you roll your eyes at me, hear me out….
First, consider this: Vetiver oil is made from the roots of a grass that’s super hard to harvest. It takes 5 men five full days to harvest enough plant material to make a gallon of Vetiver essential oil. It takes 1 TON of peppermint leaves to make 1 gallon of peppermint oil. Even the most inexpensive oil, Lemon, takes 60 lemons for one 15mL bottle of oil. Do you seriously think that the dollar store can sell a quality product with this much plant material in it for $1?
One problem we have in our society is our mindset. We are conditioned to believe that more and bigger are better. That’s simply not the truth with essential oils. Those oils are power packed and only need to be used in tiny amounts. They’re 50-70% more potent than their herb counterpart. For comparison, 28 cups of peppermint tea contain the same amount of peppermint that is found in ONE DROP of peppermint oil. Generally, a dose of essential oil is a drop or two, so we’re counting DROPS, not bottles. One bottle of oil can last you a very long time, even if you use it regularly.
For example. I might use a drop of Serenity oil blend on the bottom of my feet before bed to help me get the rest I need. That drop of oil cost me .12 cents. Is 12 cents a worthy investment for a good night’s sleep? YOU BET! If you’re interested in the cost per drop of all of doTERRA’s oils, here’s a list. Erase the more and bigger is better and focus on the power of one tiny drop. And remember that a whole lot of plant material went into producing that tiny drop of oil.
(Oh, and an extra bonus is that those oils don’t expire!! Most of them will outlive all of us….so no yearly trip to the store to get a remedy that will expire before you use it up….)
You’re Pretty Sure This Essential Oil Thing is Just a Passing Fad
Everyone is into essential oils today, but what’s the fad for tomorrow? You’re not a fad chaser! You’re a sensible human being!
Essential oils have been around for centuries. And history proves that it wasn’t just the hippies that loved them back then (they’ve found them in king’s tombs, for instance). They were considered the most precious of commodities. Somewhere along the line, essential oils fell out of popularity because other remedies came along that seemed easier to obtain and use. The popularity they’re gaining these days is because they offer non-toxic solutions to things that we need help fixing. They are easy to obtain in our modern day and age, and they’re easy to learn how to use.
The truth is. They’ve always been here and they’re here to stay.
Even if You Had Some Oils, You Don’t Think You’d Use Them Much
You don’t make soap and candles and you don’t need any funky smelling perfume.
One amazing thing about essential oils is that they’re good for almost everything. I use them daily. DAILY. Seriously. Let’s just take a simple, inexpensive oil for an example: LEMON OIL. I drink it in my water (for detox), I use it to de-gunk stuff (like my fingers THREE TIMES already today from pitchy wood I’ve been putting in the wood stove), I cook with it, I make cleaners with it (cheaper than the store variety, non-toxic and natural and super quick to make). Some people use it for seasonal discomfort. You can clean your cutting boards (anti-bacterial properties). Add some to your sour smelling towels to get rid of the stink, it’s uplifting (just smelling it makes me happy), it boosts immunity and digestion and all sorts of things. That’s just one simple oil. And they’re all like that.
You Can’t Afford Them
Your budget is tight and there’s no way you’re going to add some expensive little bottles of oil to your purchasing list.
Consider this. You can buy one $10 bottle of lemon oil and do all the things I mentioned above (cooking, cleaning, detoxing, de-gunking, seasonal discomfort and a host of other things. If you bought lemon flavoring, a slew of cleaning products, some expensive detox treatment, some goo-be-gone goop, other remedies to support your immunity, discomfort, etc. do you think the total would be more than $10? Yes. Quite a bit larger.
What if those little drops of oil could support your body for optimal health? How much is that worth?
Even in my most poor state of living, I largely afforded what was most important to me (even if I had to be creative sometimes). Supporting my body’s health and de-cluttering my life from all the toxic chemicals and potions is a win/win to me. Not only that, I save money and space because one bottle of oil is good for so many things. (Consider the alternative: toilet cleaner, tub and tile cleaner, floor cleaner, wood cleaner, window cleaner…..EVERY. SINGLE. THING. NEEDS. ITS. OWN. CLEANER. Really? Stop the madness!)
You Already Use X Brand of Essential Oils (and Are Happy With Them)
If what you’ve got works, why bother switching things up?
Just for a moment, think about this. Say you went to the local coffee shop and ordered a triple shot espresso over ice. You paid for it and stood watching the barista dump in 1 shot, stir in a little mud, add some water and pour it over ice. It might still taste coffee-like and even smell like coffee. It could possibly even give you a caffeine buzz. But you didn’t get what you paid for, right?
What if you have some essential oils and you love how they work, but there was something that might work better? Would you be willing to try it? MOST essential oils on the market are ‘cut’ with other things. You might be getting 10% of the essential oil mixed in with 90% of a carrier oil (almond oil, coconut oil, etc.). And yes, maybe that oil that you’re using is doing wonders for you (essential oils are powerhouses after all). But what would they do for you if you got 100% instead of 10%?
I have some friends who were using frankincense oil that they purchased from a local whole-foods-type grocery store. And they LOVED it. LOVED. They used it daily and felt a huge difference in their lives. But then they tried doTERRA’s frankincense. And it felt like night and day to them. One of them said to me, “After trying doTERRA’s oil, it felt like we were putting water on our feet before, which is crazy because we could feel positive results with the other oil. However, this new oil is simply amazing.”
Even if you are happy with your current oils, maybe, just maybe, there’s oil out there that’s better. Keep an open mind.
You Don’t Trust All Those Unqualified People Teaching About Essential Oils
There’s a lot of whackos out there spouting misinformation that could get someone killed.
The beauty of the age in which we live is that there is an abundance of knowledge and lots of self-educating you can do for FREE. Don’t take anyone’s word on anything. Do your own research. There might be whackos out there, but you don’t have to listen to them.
You Believe Essential Oils are Dangerous
Like, what about the guy that drank Eucalyptus oil and died?
I heard that story too. I have no idea if it’s true or not (I have my suspicions). But the article said he drank 8 oz of eucalyptus oil. First, who drinks a cup of essential oil? And where does one get that much? (Our biggest oil bottles are 15mL) Even if this story were true, based on the quantity ingested, my guess is that it was a perfume quality oil which is MOSTLY chemicals. None of that is a good idea.
Can essential oils hurt you? Yes. Anything can hurt you if misused. I heard a story on the radio about a lady who was chugging water to see how much and how quickly she could down it. It killed her. Yes. Water. But you don’t see people starting petitions about how dangerous water is, right….we look at that sad story and think: USE COMMON SENSE, people. Please.
Educate yourself about essential oils. Learn how to dilute them. Learn when to use them and when not to use them. Use caution. Be smart.
You Don’t Want to Sell Essential Oils
You’re not into bugging all your friends and family and trying to make them sign up to get essential oils at a discount.
The great news is: You don’t have to. Period. doTERRA has this super cool philosophy that basically says: Wherever you are, that’s great. Be there. If you just want to use oils for yourself, awesome. Have at it. If you want to share oils with others, great. Go for it. If you want to make a part-or-full-time income, terrific. We’ll help teach you how.
But the point is: YOU get to pick how little or how much involvement you want in doTERRA. NOBODY will pressure you otherwise.
Oh, and for the record: I 100% feel the same way about bugging people. So I don’t. BUT I’m happy to help anyone who wants help to figure out how essential oils might enhance their life and support health.
You Don’t Want to Get Mixed Up in Some Pyramid Scheme
Anyone who thinks they’re going to get rich quick on your efforts better think again. You’re not going to work hard for someone else’s profit!
I totally get you on this one. I don’t like pyramids, either. That’s why I don’t work a traditional job anymore. I got sick and tired of working hard and trading my life for not enough money to survive on. While I scrimped to get by, the owners made great money off my efforts. I wanted my efforts to count for me.
There’s actually a lot of misinformation out there about what an MLM (multi-level marketing or network marketing) really is. First, let me say, it is NOT a pyramid. Pyramid business opportunities are actually illegal. Learning to spot the difference between a legitimate business opportunity and a scam is really important. Here are some things to look for:
For doTERRA, their products are their business. Only about 10% of the people who sign up for a wholesale account ever ‘go into business’. The other 90% of the folks are just happy to have life-changing oils at a good price that they can trust. Even without the business opportunity to make money, the business would survive because getting rich quick is not the primary focus.
You Don’t Want to Be Forced into Buying Oils Every Month
You don’t want to get locked into some monthly purchasing requirement where you’re just buying a bunch of stuff to make your quota. Stuff that you probably don’t need anyway.
GOOD NEWS: You don’t have to buy anything you don’t want to buy! EVER!! The choice is completely up to you. Buy once a year if you like. Or every week. Spend $2 or spend $2,000. It doesn’t matter. It’s a wholesale account. You use it like you’d use your Costco card. It gives you access to better pricing. You don’t have to meet any quotas.
There are some programs you can join if you want. To earn free products, get free shipping, get free product points and cold hard cash. But these things are all optional. And, like other things, you won’t be pressured to buy anything you don’t want or more than you want. Period. Whew. That was easy, yes?
You Can’t Get Behind Something that Doesn’t Have Any Scientific Evidence to Back It Up
Just give me the cold hard facts, ma’am. That’s what you want. No magical thinking. You want proof.
That might have been true at one point, but it’s not true anymore. More and more medical professionals are researching and using essential oils. doTERRA even has a medical advisory board. They’ve also partnered with various hospitals to continue research efforts.
You can do some of your own research here at PubMed and also over at Aromatic Science as well as Essential Oil University.
You Want to Support the Local Economy and All These Oils Are From Foreign Countries
You’re a red, white and blue, through and through and believe in buying local when possible and at least Made in the USA.
doTERRA does actually support local, national and global communities with jobs and income. First, there are some oils that are sourced in the USA (like Peppermint from Washington and Hawaiian Sandalwood from Hawaii). The goal of sourcing is to go to where the plant originated and harvest it in such a way that it’s sustainable for years to come. Lavender grown in the USA is not the same lavender that is grown in France, where it originates. They go find the best product. Sometimes that’s in the USA, other times it’s not.
doTERRA is a huge supplier of jobs. All over the world. Forbes rated doTERRA in the top ten mid-sized businesses. They employ nearly 2,000 people in their corporate location in Utah. And there are over 4 million Wellness Advocates worldwide, many of them running a doTERRA business for profit.
You Only Buy Certified Organic Products
If doTERRA’s products are so great, why aren’t they certified organic?
doTERRA’s oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils. They’re dedicated to purity and use independent labs to test each and every batch of oil to certify that nothing has been added NOR taken out of the essential oil. They also stand behind their commitment to purity with incredible transparency. You can read the reports from any bottle of oil you’ve purchased (by vat number) on their sourcing website Source to You.
You’d Rather Support the Little Guy
You don’t trust big companies….they’re probably big because they’re out to get everyone’s money.
One of the things I love MOST about doTERRA is that they’re for the little guy. They partner with farmers in Third World Countries and give them fair trade wages, build schools and hospitals and dig wells. They pour money into all sorts of good causes like Days For Girls and Operation Underground Railroad. Even their company incentive trips include a service component. They want to make sure they’re making the world a better place, not just taking. And that philosophy shows up in EVERYTHING they do.
Here’s more about their ‘Co-Impact Sourcing’. It’s awesome.
You Like the Variety of Oils Found From Other Oil Companies
You want what you want. doTERRA doesn’t have it but someone else does.
doTERRA’s commitment to purity, quality, and sustainability drive their decisions about sourcing. Every year they release new oils, but only after careful research. They want to be sure that the oils they source meet their purity standards and that the harvesting of that oil is sustainable (so we can enjoy the oils for years to come and not harm the earth in the process). They also work extensively with growers and farmers to educate and support in ways most other companies don’t. This takes time. doTERRA puts people and the stewardship of the earth above both profits and variety. Some people might see that as a deficit. I see it as a strength.
And for some of you…
